Zirovick Depina, 22, died after being shot just after midnight on Sunday at a home on Weir Street.
All eight people who were shot were in their 20s, according to authorities. One of the surviving victims was reported in serious but stable condition.
Neighbor Anthony Correia heard the gunshots.
"Sure enough, within three minutes, cops showed up, the ambulances showed up, fire trucks, and I guess there was shooting. Someone passed away," he said.
Depina's death left his family and those who knew him devastated. Loved ones remembered the 22-year-old as an open-minded young man who loved life.
Irlanda Souza, who knew Depina's family and had met him when he was a child, struggled to describe learning about his death.
"Very sad. Young man," she said. "[If] you have kids, it hurts."
Her husband, Paul Souza, said the shooting was another painful example of young lives being affected by gun violence.
"I just feel for the family," he said. "There's got to be a better way."
Investigators returned to the area Monday as authorities continued working to determine what led to the shooting.
The violence also rattled neighbors, who said they had not expected something like it to happen on their street.
The Souzas recently moved to Taunton seeking a quieter place to live. Irlanda Souza said the shooting had changed how she felt about walking through her neighborhood.
"I'm scared," she said.
Her husband said the shooting had also made him think twice about attending large gatherings.
"It's even scary, you know, to go to any kind of cookout or barbeque, because you don't know what's going to happen," Paul Souza said.
Correia said parties were common at the Weir Street home, but had not previously caused significant problems.
"There's usually no trouble. You know, they hold five or six parties a year. You know, kids, graduation parties, birthday parties," Correia said. "I don't know, this world today. It's a tough world to live in today."
Authorities had not announced an arrest in the shooting. The Bristol County District Attorney's Office had also not released updated conditions for the remaining victims on Monday.
