A third man, a 65-year-old, remains in the hospital and wasn't identified Monday.

A 67-year-old man is dead, a 65-year-old is in critical condition and a 37-year-old remains missing after an incident off Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea, officials said.

Potter was a longtime member of the Hamilton Fire Department, serving from 1998 to 2006, the department said Monday.

"We extend our deepest condolences to Carl's family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him," the statement said, adding, "Please keep Carl and his family in your thoughts during this difficult time."

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for the missing man on Sunday, but Massachusetts State Police confirmed Monday that it had aerial and marine units conducting further searches on Monday.

The Coast Guard and local police were notified shortly before 4:30 p.m. about a vessel in distress off Singing Beach, Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker and Manchester Police Chief Mark McCoy said Saturday. Three men -- 67, 65 and 37 years old -- and a dog had been on the 30-foot center console fishing boat before they ended up in the water.

Search crews were able to locate two of the men in the ocean. The 67-year-old was taken to Beverly Hospital, where he was declared dead. The 65-year-old was flown by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was in critical condition.

The dog was located alive.

An initial 911 call said the boat was taking on water -- it was not sunk by the time crews arrived on scene. Officials said Sunday that it appeared that the boat ran into rocks after losing control.
