Commuters are warned to give themselves extra time during a 10-day shutdown of Red Line service between Alewife and Park Street. Riders we spoke to Monday weren’t happy about the closure, but the MBTA says it will mean significant improvements to the system.

If you're a Red Line rider, it's a good idea to head out the door early for the next 10 days.

A partial closure of the Red Line starts Tuesday and lasts through Thursday, July 30.

MBTA leaders say crews will replace the track, renovate stations, improve radio communications, repair stairs, and clean and powerwash.

Free, accessible shuttle buses are available during the closure. Riders are warned to budget extra time - at least 70 minutes using the shuttle between Park Street and Alewife.

Riders can also opt to take an existing bus line - the 69, 87, 88, 89, 91, and 109 from Davis Square all service the general area.

The Commuter Rail is also an option.

"The Commuter Rail will be fare-free between Porter Square and North Station. Riders should note that regular fares should be purchased beyond Porter Square," the MBTA noted.
